Now AI Can Recreate Images by Scanning Our Thoughts

Researchers have developed an innovative mind-reading AI system capable of reconstructing images based on brain activity. This breakthrough, accomplished by scientists at Radboud University in the Netherlands, promises to revolutionize various fields, especially medical treatments for vision loss.

The Most Accurate Reconstructions Yet

The team at Radboud University combined their previous work with cutting-edge research to achieve unparalleled accuracy in image reconstruction. Umut Güçlü, a key member of the research team, highlighted the significance of this achievement by stating, “As far as I know, these are the closest, most accurate reconstructions”.

Inside the Studies

First Study: fMRI and Human Brain Activity

In the first study, volunteers were placed inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine. This device measures changes in blood flow in the brain, which correlates with neural activity. Participants were shown pictures of faces, and the resulting neural activity in their visual cortex was recorded. This data was then fed into the AI algorithm, which managed to reconstruct images that closely resembled the original faces.

Second Study: Electrode Arrays and Monkey Brain Activity

The second study reanalyzed data from previous experiments involving macaque monkeys. Electrode arrays were implanted in the monkeys’ brains to record their neural activity as they viewed AI-generated images. With the enhanced AI, the researchers could reconstruct these images with near-perfect accuracy, thanks to the precise data obtained from the implanted devices.

Sophisticated AI Analysis

The AI system used in these studies is particularly advanced because it learns to identify which parts of the brain are crucial for image reconstruction. By focusing on specific brain regions, the AI can create images that are remarkably similar to those originally seen by both human volunteers and the monkeys. Güçlü explained, “Basically, the AI is learning when interpreting the brain signals where it should direct its attention”.
