The Dual Impact of AI on the LGBTQ+ Community

Jun 5, 2024 | In-depth

June is Pride Month, and what better occasion to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the LGBTQIA+ community? These issues, though seemingly secondary, are critical as we all must recognize that the increasing penetration of new technologies in our society has brought us to a crossroads: will we reinforce or eradicate prejudice?

The Ongoing Challenges

By 2021, a prevailing sentiment emerged that AI systems consistently fail to understand and support LGBTQIA+ individuals. Anthropologist and gender studies expert Mary L. Gray noted that the dynamic nature of LGBTQIA+ identities poses a challenge for AI, which prefers static, unchanging data. As the Community rights evolve, this continuous push for new possibilities often clashes with AI’s inherent limitations.

AI’s Decision-Making Models

A fundamental issue lies in how AI constructs decision-making models. These models rely on existing data, which tend to exclude underrepresented groups, including those with diverse sexual identities. Gray explained that AI, by design, marginalizes anything lacking robust examples, creating barriers for inclusivity.

Representation in AI-Generated Content

Despite the involvement of LGBTQIA+ individuals in AI development, there remains a significant disconnect between these contributors and how their community is depicted by AI tools. When tasked with generating images of queer individuals, AI often resorts to stereotypical and reductive portrayals. For instance, the AI tool Midjourney produced images of lesbian women with nose rings and stern expressions, while gay men were shown as fashionably dressed with athletic builds. Such depictions offer a narrow, whitewashed version of queer life.

Surveillance Concerns

AI’s applications extend beyond image generation. Swiss researchers developed an AI model purportedly capable of determining sexual orientation with 83% accuracy by analyzing brain activity. However, critics argue that this model oversimplifies human sexuality, neglecting the existence of bisexual and asexual individuals. Such technology risks being used for surveillance and repression, particularly in regions where LGBTQIA+ expression is criminalized.

Addressing AI Limitations

Finding solutions to these challenges is complex. AI struggles with the nuanced understanding of human sexuality that humans naturally possess. The Austin Chronicle highlighted that AI, when creating content, AI tends to sanitize information, favoring mainstream commercialization over genuine representation.

Despite these issues, there are practical applications of AI that have been beneficial for years. However, as a substitute for human creativity and nuanced expression, AI falls short. The key is ensuring AI technology is developed and used responsibly, recognizing its limitations and potential biases.

Efforts to Improve AI Inclusivity

Efforts are underway to bridge these gaps. Influential figures like Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, are actively involved in improving AI’s inclusivity. Altman, who is openly gay, advocates for representation and opportunity within the tech industry, stressing that one’s sexual orientation should not deter or drive their participation in AI development. Furthermore, new language model (LLM)-based online systems, like “AI Comes Out of the Closet” developed by Daniel Pillis and Pat Pataranutaporn, can generate artificial intelligence-driven dialogues and virtual characters, creating intricate social interaction simulations. These simulations enable users to explore and refine their LGBTQIA+ advocacy strategies in a safe and controlled environment.

Overcome challenges together

While AI holds promise for various applications, its interaction with the LGBTQIA+ community reveals significant challenges. The technology’s tendency to simplify and marginalize diverse identities underscores the need for ongoing efforts to make AI more inclusive and representative. The work of every individual within the AI field is crucial in ensuring that future developments better serve all communities, respecting the rich diversity of human experiences.
