Navigating Through AI’s Impact: WEF Future of Jobs 2023 Insights


Let’s start by giving the floor to the experts from the World Economic Forum: the “WEF Future of Jobs 2023” Report serves as a cornerstone of our understanding, predicting significant shifts in the job market over the next five years. It reveals that 23% of job roles will evolve, indicating both the creation of new opportunities and the obsolescence of old ones. Despite a trend towards automation in decision-making and information processing tasks, a considerable portion of operational roles will continue to rely on human expertise at least until 2027.


Corporate Adoption and Public Perception


The report also highlights that approximately 75% of businesses plan to integrate AI technologies within the next five years. This anticipated transformation has sparked a mix of reactions, ranging from enthusiasm to concern, among the workforce regarding the impending changes.


The rise of “AI Anxiety”

The term “AI anxiety” embodies the feelings of worry, fear, or unease that some individuals may experience in relation to artificial intelligence and its implications. This phenomenon is particularly acute in the workplace, as many believe that AI might drastically alter or even threaten their job roles. Undoubtedly, the advent of new technologies will make some roles in the job market obsolete, but are we sure that this pessimism is well-founded?


What about us? The Italian Perspective on AI

A recent survey conducted by Ipsos and commissioned by Kelly, shows how Italians have mixed feelings about the introduction of new technologies in the workplace: while over half of the surveyed express concerns about AI potentially decreasing salaries and reducing work hours, a significant portion also acknowledges the potential for AI to enhance workplace efficiency and safety. The Italian workforce is particularly wary of AI leading to job cuts, with 68% fearing staff reductions and 55% worrying about the closure of businesses. However, these concerns are balanced by an optimism about the emergence of new professions and opportunities brought about by AI advancements. Well, this is precisely the perspective from which we want to look at the issue!

As AI continues to make its mark across various industries, several new career paths are opening up. Here are some examples of AI-driven roles that in the near future will be required in both the public and private sectors:


AI Ethics Expert: as AI evolves, so does the need for professionals to address its ethical implications. These experts will develop regulations, guidelines, and best practices to ensure responsible AI usage.

AI Optimization Engineer: specialists in enhancing the performance of neural networks and machine learning algorithms will become crucial for companies aiming to optimize their AI systems.

AI-Assisted Work Transition Consultant: these professionals will help companies integrate AI into their work environments, training employees to effectively collaborate with AI and automated tools.

AI Security Specialist: with increased AI usage comes greater security risks. These specialists will protect AI systems from cyber threats and implement security measures to prevent data breaches.

AI-Powered Data Analyst: data analysis increasingly driven by AI will require experts capable of interpreting and utilizing algorithm-generated data for strategic decision-making.

Immersive Experience Developer (XR): developers capable of creating innovative augmented and virtual reality experiences will be in demand as these technologies merge with AI.

Personal AI Trainer: as AI personalities become more sophisticated and widespread, trainers will be needed to help individuals and businesses customize and optimize their AI interactions.

As we await the development of specialized educational programs and training courses, what can be done to alleviate the fears and anxiety of that part of the population that is still skeptical? businesses play a pivotal role in mitigating AI anxiety. Transparent management of AI implementations and open communication about their benefits can significantly alleviate employee concerns. Promoting continuous learning and supporting employees with resources to safely and effectively use AI are crucial.
